When you record a XESC file with the Screen Capture application, you actually use a dedicated screencap codec which is extremely efficient at representing that kind of data. Unfortunately, near-lossless quality using a low bitrate with the standard VC-1 or H.264 raster-based encoders for Silverlight playback just isn't possible. What I’m hoping is that the screen encoding profile in Encoder actually analyzes the source, so if we give it a near-lossless capture, it can work its magic just like it could with an XESC. If so, we can give guidance to non-Encoder users to just provide us with huge files knowing that there's a noticeable difference in our ultimate result.
